What's new in Zabbix 5.4

Scheduled PDF report generation

Zabbix will generate and send customized daily, weekly, or monthly PDF reports. Now any Zabbix dashboard can be turned into a PDF report! Access to this functionality is controlled by a new user role.

Much more powerful problem detection

Now Zabbix supports extremely powerful new syntax for trigger expressions. It makes possible the creation of highly sophisticated conditions for problem detection. Also, a new set of operators, statistical, mathematical, and string functions was introduced to make it even more powerful.

Advanced data aggregation

The aggregation capabilities of Zabbix were extended to support the selection of metrics by host groups, metric wildcards, and tags. It simplifies data aggregation for capacity planning, business-level monitoring, and advanced problem detection. The existing functionality of aggregated metrics was merged into calculated metrics for simplicity.

Now Zabbix uses unified syntax for everything: triggers and calculated metrics!

Visualization improvements

Zabbix 5.4 features unification of functionality for screens and dashboards and introduces support of multi-page dashboards. One platform to visualize all your data!

API tokens for secure integrations

Support of named API tokens with expiry date helps integrate Zabbix with 3rd party systems easily and securely. A new user role controls who is allowed to create API tokens.

More power to tags

Zabbix 5.4 drops support of host-level applications and replaces them with metric tags. Now tags are supported for all critical objects in Zabbix: templates, hosts, host prototypes, triggers, metrics, and events.

Easy to manage templates

Each template element got a unique ID that helps to perform template updates and a safe way. When importing a new template, Zabbix will clearly show you a difference from the existing template.

It also enables the ability to keep templates in the Git repository and push it to Zabbix using Zabbix API in case of any updates.

Improved scalability

Zabbix Server and Proxies do not require database connections for poller processes anymore. It saves CPU and memory resources for the database and makes monitoring faster.

Zabbix Server introduces support of in-memory cache for trend data that significantly improves the performance of trigger functions working with trend data.

Now Zabbix Server performs graceful startup to evenly distribute processing of a large amount of data coming from proxies.

The performance of the Zabbix Server was improved by reducing history syncer usage in heavy parallel workloads.

Global scripts for alerting and integrations

Global scripts now support JavaScript-based web-hooks for easy integrations with 3rd party alerting and ticketing systems. Global scripts can be used for auto-remediation, alerting, integrations, and manual actions for hosts and events.

Local value maps

No more global value maps! Value maps are moved to templates and hosts for better templates, independence of templates, and multi-tenancy.

Now we have self-contained templates without any external dependencies. Sharing of templates has never been easier!

Value maps have also got support of ranges and regular expressions for extra flexibility.

New integrations

The new version comes with out-of-the-box integrations with iTOP, VictorOps, Rocket.Chat, Express.ms, and other solutions.

New templates

In addition to existing templates, Zabbix 5.4 includes templates for monitoring APC UPS hardware, Hikvision cameras, etcd, Hadoop, Zookeeper, Kafka, AMQ, HashiCorp Vault, MS Sharepoint, MS Exchange, smartclt, Gitlab, Jenkins, Apache Ignite, and more applications and services.
